Safety Relief Valve/Pressure Holding Valve Working Principle

When water enters the pipeline from the inlet end, it flows through the needle valve into the main valve control chamber. The outlet pressure acts on the pilot valve via a conduit. When the outlet pressure exceeds the pilot valve's set value, the pilot valve closes, halting drainage from the control chamber. At this point, pressure within the main valve control chamber rises, closing the main valve and preventing further increase in outlet pressure.

When the outlet pressure drops to the pilot valve's set pressure, the pilot valve opens, allowing the control chamber to drain downstream. Since the pilot valve's drainage capacity exceeds the needle valve's inlet flow, the pressure in the main valve control chamber decreases. The inlet pressure then opens the main valve. In a stable state, the control chamber's inlet and outlet flows are equal, maintaining a constant valve opening and steady outlet pressure. Adjusting the pilot valve spring sets the outlet pressure.
